Fr. Rama Coomaraswamy R.I.P.
Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Rama Coomaraswamy, M.D., F.A.C.S, died the night of July 19, 2006 in Arkansas where he was being treated for bone cancer. Father was an excellent surgeon, doctor and writer.
Born in the United States in 1929, his parents were Indian and Argentinian. Raised a Hindu, his early education was in India, England and Canada as well as in the United States, most notably at Harvard
University.
For many years he was a cardiovascular/cardiac surgeon on the staff of New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine; he was also chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut for five years and also practiced at Greenwich Hospital.
After retiring from surgery, he was retrained in psychiatry and also taught at Albert Einstein in that field. He was a professor of Ecclesiastical History at the the SSPX’s American seminary in Ridgefield, Connecticut for five years. He was close to Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, however as Dr. Coomaraswamy grew closer and closer to sedevacantism he assisted the Society of Saint Pius V as they were beginning.
Prior to his ordination, Father was married for many years. He personally knew Mother Teresa of Calcutta, providing her homes and missions with medical care.
He was friends with many noted traditionalists such as Bishop Robert McKenna, Bishop José Ramon Lopez-Gaston, Malachi Martin, Father Charles Fiore (O.P., later FSSP)and other Catholic speakers and writers.
After agreeing to end marital relations with his wife, Dr. Coomaraswamy received the Sacrament of Holy Orders from Bishop Lopez-Gaston, who was assisted by other bishops and priests, including Malachi Martin.
Father was a noted author, and his works included the following: The Destruction of the Christian Tradition (1981); The Problems with the New Mass: A Brief Overview of the Major Theological Difficulties Inherent in the Novus Ordo Missae (1990); The Problem with the Other Sacraments (1998) and The Invocation of the Name of Jesus (1999). He also was a guest on the Art Bell Show in early 2006, and appeared in many traditional Catholic programs and interviews.
